Breakwater
Privacy Policy
1. Your surf journal
Breakwater is a surf journal made by Caisson HQ LLC. It stores the sessions, spots, boards, ratings, notes, conditions, wetsuit details, and photos you choose to record. It does not require a separate Breakwater account.
2. Storage and private iCloud sync
Your journal is stored on your device. The app is configured to sync it through Apple's private CloudKit database using your iCloud account. If the iCloud-enabled store cannot open, Breakwater attempts to open a local-only store. Settings shows the current sync state; it does not provide an in-app switch for turning iCloud sync on or off.
Unsaved session edits and their photos can also be kept in local recovery files. If you choose to set aside a problematic draft, its files are retained separately on the device for review. These recovery files are separate from your saved journal.
3. Photos, spots, and conditions
You add a session photo through Apple's system photo picker. Breakwater receives the image you select and stores a resized JPEG copy with the session. It does not browse your photo library or use the camera. Spot names and surf conditions are entered manually; the app does not request your device's location or fetch map, weather, or tide data.
4. Widgets and Shortcuts
Breakwater writes a local summary for its widget, including session dates, streaks, recent spot names, and ratings. This information can appear on your Home Screen. When you invoke its Siri or Shortcuts actions, the app can read your streak or log a session using the spot, board, and rating you provide.
5. Optional reminders
The daily reminder is off until you enable it. Breakwater asks for notification permission when you turn it on, then schedules a local reminder at your chosen time. The reminder uses general text rather than your journal content. You can turn the reminder off in the app.
6. Backups and deletion
Export Backup creates a copy of every saved session, spot, board, and stored photo. Apple's file exporter lets you choose its destination. The backup contains readable journal records and photo files; it is not a password-protected export. Protect it and choose its destination with care. Open Backup displays a read-only recovered copy and does not replace your current journal.
You can delete individual sessions in the app. Spots and boards can be deleted only when no sessions use them. The app does not provide a single Delete All Data command. Deleting a journal record does not remove exported backups, copies held by a file provider, or separate recovery files. Removing the app does not by itself delete data held in iCloud or backups managed separately by you and Apple.
7. Analytics and other services
Breakwater does not include advertising, analytics, tracking, or third-party crash-reporting software, and does not send your journal to a Caisson-operated server. It uses Apple services for private iCloud sync and the system features described above. It has no in-app purchase flow.
